As a succubus, I’ve always preyed on boys. (Of age boys!) I don’t kill them, only take their energy that they’re all too willing to give. But lately, men and boys have seemed so dull. So basic.

In my first semester of college, away from my clan for the first time, I discovered how incredible girls are. So soft. So hot! How had I never noticed?

Week one, I met Piper, probably the cutest human I’d ever seen. She liked me! And she kissed me! After that … everything changed. Suddenly, I saw all the girls around me. Suddenly, I yearned for them. Like Yaz, the dancer. And Maja, the ice queen; though she can just be so awful.

How could I navigate my desires: wanting to kiss them, date them, love them, and still keep my true nature secret? This wasn’t what succubi did!

If I wanted to survive college among the humans, I needed to figure it out!

And not let it distract me from dangerous things … like that professor who always looks at me like he knows what I am, and doesn’t like it.

A Wayward Succubus Gets Schooled is a super spicy sapphic why-choose paranormal romance set at a university in Chicago.

What on Earth is the Evengloam?

While technically existing on Earth, the Evengloam is more of an overlay. It’s a realm of twilight that exists on top of the world we all know. It’s the realm of magic, of monsters, and it’s where those creatures that go bump in the night actually go when they’ve decided to stop tormenting you.

Gwen, our titular Wayward Succubus, comes from the Evengloam, as does her familial clan. While they call Eastern Iowa their home, and do most of their feeding at the convenient all-you-can-eat World’s Largest Truck Stop on I-80, if you were to wander into their home, you might find yourself someplace entirely other, as a foolish couple did one Halloween, wondering out of our world and into the Evengloam, and driven mad by the sights within.

The Evengloam isn’t horrible, it’s actually rather mundane. The creatures of the world live, work, converse, romance, and continue their familial lines there, mostly, descending into the world when necessary or desired.

The Eisheth Succubus Clan practices what they call “The Roam,” where a young succubus can go forth into the world, eschewing the Evengloam for a while, to seek their fortune before deciding to come of age in the community. Most return quickly, but some grow fond of the human world.

Who is Penelope Horne?

As is the case with many authors of the spicy romance arena, Penelope Horne doesn’t actually exist. There’s really no point in hiding that from y’all. She is a pen name of two queer authors in other genres, writing in tandem: Talia Tower and Cooper S. Beckett. Talia is the author of the queer fairy-tale retelling The Bard & the Beast and the forthcoming reverse-harem fairy tale trilogy Their Lady Knight. Cooper is the author of the queer horror series The Spectral Inspector, featuring Prudence Osgood, one badass ghost hunter, as well as a number of sex ed, polyamory, and non-monogamy books. Together, as Penelope Horne, they write queer paranormal romances, often with a sapphic bent, and almost never monogamous.
